Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck
North Shore, Oahu
Giovanni’s started operating out of a converted 1953 bread truck without much more than a few recipes for great shrimp and an entrepreneurial spirit. They drove our beloved truck around the North Shore stopping along the side of the road for a couple hours at each stop to share what they thought was some pretty special food- turns out, they were the only shrimp truck around. Locals took notice and word began to spread about the delicious shrimp…
In 1996, they decided to park the truck at 56-505 Kamehameha highway in beautiful, historic Kahuku town. Word of mouth grew from locals and tourists alike and they had to retire old Bessie and get a new truck.
In 2006, Giovanni’s became such a part of the community they purchased the land they were parked on and in 2010, built a pavilion, so patrons and visitors could enjoy their shrimp, the weather and each other.
“After so many recommendations from colleagues and insider travel tips. I had to make a stop at the Givovanni’s shrimp truck on the North Shore. As we pulled up there was a long line of locals - what a great sign! The prawns were massve and we felt like one of the locals eating them.”
Peta’s favourite: Shrimp Scampi $13: This garlicky delight has made Giovanni’s famous worldwide! A dozen marinated in olive oil, fresh chopped garlic and lemon butter, served with two scoops of rice all drizzled with garlic lemon butter and caramalised chunks of tasty garlic.
