Halloween @ NiHao Bar
As soon as we arrived at Ni Hao Bar, we knew we were in for a great night! This place has such a high vibe. It’s advertised as a rooftop but its around high rise buildings, so no views. Not that it matters because you don’t come here for the views - you come for the food!
First up was Crab Rangoon dip with wonton chips and sweet chilli. Now rangoon are filled crisp dumpling appetisers served primarily in American Chinese restaurants. So I suppose this was a deconstructed crab rangoon dip, it was super creamy and not overly powerful crabby taste. The sweet chilli sauce was such a good addition. Reminded me of wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli but with an asian, crabby twist.
I have discovered you can either do cheeseburger spring rolls really well or really bad and these thankfully were great! Served with a classic sweet and sour sauce.
Now the absolute highlight of the menu, the bao! I think on the night we were told these were beef? But it was Pork Katsu, xo mayo, pickled onion. This one had coriander too. It was seriously incredible. The meat was soooo crunchy! I will return because of this dish. It wasn’t overly mayo-y and a little dry in fact but so crunchy and the bao was soft it just worked.
Next up was Mi Goreng + Fried egg + topping of our choice - we chose pork belly with lapcheong (Chinese sausage) and Andy’s sambal (an Indonesian XO sauce). Not super generous with the pork belly, we had to search for it a bit. The noodles had a little kick to it. I love n00ds.
Onto the fried chicken, we tried the honey soy, which was really good/ The chicken pieces were big and chunky.
Dessert time was the Yuzu meringue tart, (Yuzu’s are like lumpy lemons), this was a great dessert to end the meal.
We were here for Squid Game themed Halloween night and it was interactive and fun - full video on my tiktok @postcardsfrompeta. We played the initial red blue tile game and dalgona candy game - I died hehe
There are two different parts to the bar, the undercover main bit near the DJ booth but I preferred where we sat which was in the open air bit. Neon signs, mirrors for selfies and graffiti murals was a nice aesthetic. Make sure you order the bao! Also our waitress for the night was amazing!! Will be back for that bao again.
