Traditional Indian with a new twist

Masala Theory

Surry Hills

Dinner with my bff

Masala Theory has only been opened 3 months, and you can see it’s getting more and more popular. A cozy spot in Surry Hills this is the perfect place for anything from a casual lunch or dinner to a family outing, friendly business meeting, or alternative to the been-there-done-that date.

Think hip. Think fresh. Think creative yet casual. Because that’s what neo-Indian food is all about – and Masala Theory believe these fun little dishes are truly the best food India has to offer!

The service is truly exceptional here, we were constantly being looked after with a smile. The decor is funky, funny and modern and we absolutely loved the music which was indian versions of the top 40, so catchy and good.

Drinks

ROSE LEMONADE $6 - so yummy <3

BUBBLE GUM LASSI $5 - my first lassi which is a yoghurt based drink, i can see why you would need it with all the spice, the bubblegum flavour was spot on, not overpowering or sickly or fake bubblegum taste

Entrees

THREE SISTERS CHAT $15

Crispy-fried English spinach, garbanzo beans, black chickpeas, sweetened yoghurt, date-tamarind chutney, mint chutney - a tower of yoghurt and the spinach was crispy and fried, so we dipped this into the yoghurt, it’s a cold dish which we didn’t expect by looking at it but it was delicious. Definitely a crowd pleaser dish!

DAL CHILLA $16

Split green lentil crepes, Indian cottage cheese, spinach, onion, raisins, cashews, tomato chutney - these were spicy af

KALONJI CHICKEN TIKKA $16

Nigella seeds, garlic and cheese marinated boneless chicken, roasted red pepper sauce, corn purée, laccha pyaaz - I’m not a big chicken fan, but bff said she loved this

Mains

SALLI BOTI $27

Chef’s special goat curry, black cardamom, cinnamon, onion-tomato gravy, match-stick potatoes - One of masala theory’s most popular dishes, the waiter told us every 2nd table orders this! I thought it was pork! It didn’t have that distinctive goat taste i think because its so slow cooked and absolutely delicious

VILLAGE FISH CURRY $25

Market fish, coconut milk broth, lemongrass, kafir lime - we were lucky enough to get barramundi! This was seriously delicious.

JEERA RICE $6

Basmati rice tempered with cumin seeds and whole spices

CHEESE CHILLI CORIANDER NAAN $6

Dessert

CHAI PANNA COTTA $12

With nut praline and cinnamon glass - yasss, one of my all-time favourite desserts. This was SO good!

DECONSTRUCTED MOTICHOOR LADDOO $13

With saffron rabdi and dry fruits - a traditional dessert, it was cakey and yum

Reading back through the menu with what we ate we were truly spoiled by Masala Theory, thank you so much for having us Yashpal and thanks for the invite Rhys @ CoCreate Communications <3
